The Social Alien
The alien went viral. The cover story is a watermelon.
Bakerfield, Ohio, population 12,000, has never produced anything worth posting. Then Eddie Kowalski opens an account called @TotallyNotAnAlien and starts sharing the things the three-foot green alien in Sam’s garage says out loud: why humans pay for water that falls from the sky, why rush hour never seems to arrive, why a species with all human knowledge in its pocket uses it to look at cats.
By Monday lunch the alien is trending. By Tuesday he has half a million followers, a news write-up with his face in it, and a federal flag on his account. Deleting it would look guilty. Leaving it up is how you get found.
So Kevin Marsh, who has not tried at anything since roughly the ninth grade, comes up with a plan. From the couch. It is an art project. It is by a Swedish exchange student. It involves a watermelon.
Nobody investigates dumb. Kevin is counting on it.

Book Four Cold Open
Eddie Kowalski lay on his mattress above the closed Hoagie Heaven on North Main with the TV on for company and a spiral notebook open on his chest, all seven of his blond spikes still upright against the pillow, and at two minutes past eleven on Sunday night he pressed POST. A mile and a half east, alone in a garage on Starfighter Lane, in a white shirt that reached his knees, Zog had the ship’s display up and was reading the humans.

OBSERVER NOTE: The display shows every human face as a green oval. Tonight everyone on Earth looks like me. I find this restful.
OBSERVER NOTE: The humans have built a machine that allows each of them to speak to all of the others at once. In the last nine minutes it has shown me a sandwich, a dog dressed as a smaller dog, and a man falling off a trampoline eleven times, set to music. The man is fine. I checked. The music was the same each time.
OBSERVER NOTE: Beneath each post is a number. It is the agreement tally: the count of humans who have touched a small heart to say that they agree. On Zogar, agreement is recorded in triplicate and takes nine working days to process. Here it takes one finger, and nobody reads what they are agreeing to first. I consider this very brave.

OBSERVER NOTE: What is a “fit”? Is this a medical emergency? The human is standing in front of a mirror in a large coat and appears unharmed. I have checked my own fit. The shirt reaches my knees. I believe that is a good fit.
@nocapjustfacts_99
no cap this is the best gas station coffee in the state

OBSERVER NOTE: What cap? I am wearing a cap. It is on backward, which I am told is correct. Is this about me? I have looked at the photograph for some time and I do not see a cap. I see a cup. I believe the human has confused the two.
@bassline.devotee
this slaps

OBSERVER NOTE: The post is about a song. I have listened to the song twice. It did not slap. Songs do not have hands. I watched the video a third time to look for hands, and there was a man in a hat pointing at the sky, but he did not slap anyone either.
@sloane_defense_squad
Sloane did NOT deserve that

OBSERVER NOTE: She did. I have watched the episode forty times. She did.
@literally.deceased.4real
im literally dead

OBSERVER NOTE: The human is still typing. I have reported this to no one.
OBSERVER NOTE: All week, whenever I spoke, Eddie wrote in a small book. He does not share it. I assume it is about wrestling.

OBSERVER NOTE: Four hundred thousand humans watched it fall. None of them helped.
@touchgrass_enforcement
some of yall need to touch grass

OBSERVER NOTE: I went behind the garage and touched the grass, as instructed. It was cold and slightly wet. Nothing further occurred. I have returned to the display and I am awaiting the second instruction.

@TotallyNotAnAlien
Why do humans pay money for water? It literally falls from the sky. Your entire species is being scammed by clouds.
300
OBSERVER NOTE: I said this. I said it at the EZ-STOP, beside the water machine, to Carlos, who was restocking a shelf and did not respond. Another being has reached the same conclusion independently. Its face is a green oval, like everyone’s. I am not alone on this planet about water. I have registered an agreement with three fingers. I do not know how many fingers are required.
OBSERVER NOTE: The tally is now 301. I did not do that one. It is now 318. Somewhere in the dark, three hundred and eighteen humans are also not alone about water. I have never agreed with so many beings at the same time. Where I am from, it would require a permit.
@snackwave.og
my grandmas meatloaf is bussin

OBSERVER NOTE: This word does not exist in any of the forty thousand languages Z.A.R.A. holds. I have asked her twice. The second time she did not answer, which is also an answer. I believe humans are inventing new words specifically to confuse extraterrestrial observers. It is working.

Earth Day Seven.
The humans have made my words famous. Eddie wrote them in a small book, which I believed was about wrestling, and placed them on the internet, where approximately five hundred thousand humans read them in three days. In my department, five hundred thousand citizens reading one clerk’s observations would be classified as a civil emergency. Here nobody has classified it. Nobody has the form.
I have studied how the internet weighs a thing. It weighs a remark about the price of water exactly as it weighs a photograph of a fruit. All words are equal. All thoughts are content. A human may say something true, and a human may photograph a watermelon under a light that flickers, and the internet will place them one above the other and ask only which has more agreement.
The watermelon has more agreement.
Several humans have called me “based.” Eddie says it means “admirable.” Li says it also means “the bottom of something.” It is a compliment and a basement at the same time. I intend to use it on Carlos.
The human called Kevin chose the watermelon. He chose it carefully, from four candidates, one of them an onion, and he stood up to do it. I have never seen him stand for so long. Eddie says it is a record.
Tonight Eddie dressed as me, for the podcast humans. I did the face. He was not a good likeness. He was a very loud one. He is still green. Carlos has scrubbed him for forty minutes with a soap intended for hands, and the soap has lost. Eddie intends to remain green at the educational facility tomorrow, as art.
On Zogar, a citizen may address the public once, at retirement, for four minutes, on an approved topic. The High Council monitors forty thousand civilizations, and the Bureau monitors the Council, and none of them has built a system that allows every individual to speak to every other individual, simultaneously, about nothing, forever. The Council would never permit it. It would be inefficient. It would be ungovernable. The internet was a mistake. It is also the greatest invention in the galaxy. It is a watermelon with two hundred thousand likes.
The watermelon continues to work. I am beginning to understand Earth’s relationship with truth: they prefer it in small doses, wrapped in something silly, and delivered by an account they do not believe is real.
I remain disguised. The shirt continues to work.
End transmission.
